Weirton, WV —

What do you do when you have a surplus of a quarter of a million dollars? On Wednesday night Weirton City Council members were faced with that dilemma.

Council members and the public gathered for a workshop to figure out where thousands of dollars will go that was created by the nearly $250,000 surplus in the city's general fund and the workshop wasn't without some debate.

"Council discussed some of their feelings on what should be funded and some of the things that are not going to be funded," said Mayor George Kondik.

Many different groups and departments throughout the city brought some ideas to the table. Like spring paving or a training officer for the fire department.

Kondik says they are seriously considering every idea. Kondik says the city is watching where every dollar is spent and that's important, especially for those who attended the meeting.

"Any department that isn't trying to improve itself is doing something that is going backwards," said Weirton Fire Chief Jerry Shumate.

Council members will meet again in two weeks after they have had time to review all the suggestions and they hope that they will be able to finalize everything then. The mayor says they would like to get the revised budget to the state by Sept. 10.
