Weirton residents raising money to save Marland Heights pool

WEIRTON, W.Va. —

Weirton residents are working to raise money to save a pool on Marland Heights that was closed several years ago.

Parks & Recreation Director Terry Weigel said the board stopped plans to demolish the pool after this week's meeting, meaning the community will have time to raise funds to repair the structure.

The Marland Heights Civic Association is spearheading the fundraising effort to renovate the Margaret Manson Weir Memorial Pool.

Gaston Blanc of the civic association said, "We're looking to build that into a complex that people would want to go not just for swimming, but recreation."

The age of the pipes and the facility pose a challenge to renovation efforts since the pool closed in 2005. There is no set time limit on how long the group has to raise money.

The parks board plan is to build a skating rink in its place. But, Weigel said, "We can wait and let this group see what they can do."
