Westbound Wheeling Tunnel Closure Starts Monday

WHEELING, W.Va. —

Starting at 7:30 a.m. Monday, the westbound lanes of the Wheeling Tunnel will close for several months so crews can make repairs and upgrades.

The work is scheduled to last until October and some business owners said they're concerned the construction will deter customers and hurt their profits.

Officials with the West Virginia Department of Highways said they're working with the businesses and hope to have the work done as soon as possible.

Crews will first prepare signage and block off the entrances. Once the lanes are closed, the contracting company, Ahern & Associates will start electrical, tile and painting work.

Friday, crews had already posted some signs around town telling drivers how to get around the closure. Drivers can take Interstate 470 or exit at 16th Street off Interstate 70. From there, drivers can take state Route 2 back to the westbound interstate.

DOH officials said they've had plenty of practice shutting down the westbound tube before when they did nightly closures for several weeks while crews made minor repairs.
