But one auditorium was packed with screaming fans waiting to watch a documentary film about 1980s pop group New Kids on the Block.

And there were five seats reserved for the band members themselves.

Wheeling was selected through an online vote at the band's Web site, joining only Seattle and New York on a very exclusive tour.

"Wheeling really was the city with the most enthusiasm and energy and for us, it was perfect," said founding member Donnie Wahlberg. "We wanted to make it intimate and fun and not just under the bright lights of Broadway."

Fans were also able to purchase tickets and register to win VIP passes on the band's site.

"We went to see them when we were little kids and we got a chance to see them and meet them today," said Tracy McClure, who drove in from Akron to see the show.

Wheeling mayor Andy McKenzie and Ohio County Commissioner Randy Wharton presented the members of the group with a proclamation welcoming them to the Ohio Valley.

New Kids on the Block scored huge hits in the 80s and 90s before breaking up in 1994.

They reunited in 2007 and embarked on a 2008 tour which is documented in their new DVD "Coming Home," which will see an official release Feb. 2.
