Wheeling food pantry hopes to fill shelves during Saturday food drive

By NEWS9

WHEELING, W.Va. —

On Saturday, the House of the Carpenter in Wheeling is holding a Stuff The Truck Event in hopes of filling the food pantry's shelves.

Officials that their food pantry is almost empty and the demand is as high as it’s ever been.

The event is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Wheeling and St. Clairsville Kroger stores.

Anyone who wants to can pick up a box outside of the store and shop for non-perishable items in the store, buy them, then load them on the truck.

The House of the Carpenter's executive director said they've moved from 250 some families to serve a month to almost 500. He said they need to get their food pantry shelves filled now more than ever.

"Holiday season, particular in the month of November, we see 50 percent increase, so we are looking at realistically having up to 700 families coming to us for food in the month of November," said Mike Linger.

If people don't want to shop for food but still want to contribute, monetary donations are always welcome.
