Wheeling woman sentenced after pleading guilty to attempted murder charges

By Philip Stahl

WHEELING, W.Va.—

Darleen Miller will spend the next five to 10 years behind bars after begin sentenced on two counts of second-degree attempted murder and one count of wanton endangerment.

It comes after she fired shots at several individuals in a Woodsdale neighborhood back on Dec. 23.

"She fired several rounds. We are lucky that no one got hurt. It was a dispute involving a former husband of hers. Police did a great job apprehending her, and we're thankful she pleaded guilty and was sentenced today," said Ohio County Prosecutor Scott Smith.

The man she was shooting at was James Nagy, her former husband, along with his parents who lived next door.

"We were traumatized, really shaken up about this. I just couldn't believe what happened that day. In fact, my parents are still shaken up about this that they chose not to come to the sentencing today," said Nagy.

Several family members and friends asked Judge James Mazzone to be light on her sentencing and said she needed mental health therapy.

Mazzone said the punishment was necessary for Miller because of the nature of the crimes and that there could have been a loss of life.

He sentenced her one to three years on both attempted murder counts and three years on the wanton endangerment count.
