Woman Shot In Steubenville Wednesday Night

Steubenville police say 18 year old Heather Bailey of Weirton was shot in the upper left thigh area around 10:15 pm March 23, 2005 on the corner of 5th and South Street. Officers say they pulled over a man for driving erratically on Adams Street, and found the wounded woman in the car. Police say the man found the woman on the corner, and was driving her to the hospital.

When police questioned Bailey, she said she didn't know the man who shot her, saying he approached her on the street corner, shot her, and then left. Detectives checked the scene and couldn't find anyone who witnessed the shooting. Police Chief Bill McCafferty says the department is hoping Bailey gives a better statement after she gets out of the hospital. Bailey was first treated at Trinity Medical Center, and then taken to a Pittsburgh hospital. Police say Bailey was in stable condition at last check. No one has been arrested in connection with the shooting.
