JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio —
Saturday's warmer weather made for a good day to fly as the Jefferson County Airpark hosted a Women of Aviation event, an international campaign for diversity in the field.
Jefferson County Vocational School teacher Natalie Campana doubles as a pilot, with 10 years of flying under her wing. She spearheaded the local future aviators event to encourage children and raise awareness about the field.
"I've always loved flying since I was three years old … (from) seeing a plane fly over my head, to being at Pittsburgh International Airport and getting to talk to pilots when I was in the fifth grade,” said Campana.
Her students got the chance to see the technology for the first time.
"I like flying because it's like a sense of freedom. When you're in the air, nobody can really stop you. You can do whatever you want until you hit the ground again. Then you're back to reality," said Jessica Weisberger, an aviation program student.
NEWS9's Briona Arradondo jumped inside the plane with her camera to film a bird’s-eye view. The event is just a small piece in the puzzle for Women of Aviation Worldwide Week. It also celebrates women's achievements in space.
"This is an international event from us in Ohio, all the way to India to China. They are trying to get up to 15,000 kids in the sky this week for the first time to see if they like aviation," said Campana.
For the young girls, they said it's about showing what they can do.
"Girls aren't usually the ones who do things. It's guys, and guys are always trying to do things better than girls," said Michelle Saliba, an aviation student. "So, it's good that we're trying to fly, and it's more than just guys. It's girls too."
Pier aviation pilots gave the mini-flying lessons up in the air. Campana said the challenging part is getting more people to fly.
