Ohio AG: More people could be charged after Steubenville teen rape trial ends

By NEWS9 and The Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ohio —

Ohio's attorney general said he will announce after the upcoming rape trial of two Steubenville High School students if other people will be charged.

Mike DeWine said he isn't ruling out additional charges in the case, which centers on the alleged rape of a teen girl.

DeWine said on Monday his office is currently investigating what happened after the alleged assault. Officials with the attorney general's office said they believe at least three other students witnessed the encounter and others apparently knew about it.

DeWine's office previously told lawyers for three witnesses last fall that their clients wouldn't be charged. And to date, the two 16-year-old suspects are the only people to be charged.

Hacker-activist groups and women's advocacy organizations have questioned why people who knew about the incident weren't charged under an Ohio law requiring people to report crimes of which they're aware.

The National Organization for Women and members of Ultra-Violet, an equal rights group, hand-delivered tens of thousands of signatures to DeWine's office in January.

On Monday, representatives of those groups were in Columbus again to urge DeWine to file additional charges. They delivered another petition with 85,000 signatures demanding action to prosecute those who they say knew about the alleged rape.

In particular, protesters said an 18-year-old man seen joking about the alleged crime in a 12-minute long online video should be charged with failing to report a felony crime because, under Ohio law, rape is considered a felony and failing to report a felony is a crime.

At Monday's rally in Columbus, those in attendance said it's DeWine's duty to enforce that law, make an example and make it clear that violence against women will not be tolerated.

Both teens who are charged are student-athletes at Steubenville High School. Their rape trial is set to begin on March 13 in Jefferson County Juvenile Court.
