Workers Accidently Start Fire

No Injuries Reported At The Old Weirton Steel Steubenville Plant

Workers cleaning out the old Weirton Steel Plant in Steubenville accidentally sparked a fire this morning.

The building is now owned by Dave Sugar Construction. Officials said workers there were torching acid tanks when they accidentally torched the rubber lining inside of the tanks.

Steubenville Fire Department Chief Terri Kovach said, "When the spark caught, it caught the rubber lining on fire. Any petroleum product will burn like that -- really bad."

Kovach said workers first tried to put the fire out with dirt and bricks, but were unsuccessful. He said workers were able to help contain the blaze by moving the tank into a pit.

There were no reported injuries.
