W.Va. Ranked One Of Deadliest States For Children In Summer

A new study found West Virginia had more children killed in summertime accidents than nearly any other state.

A new report released Monday by Safe Kids Worldwide ranked West Virginia the 48th safest in the country when it comes to summertime children's deaths.

Only South Dakota, Alaska and Wyoming fared worse.

The report found that accidental deaths involving children spiked dramatically between the months of May and August.

More than half of the deaths are due to drowning. Bicycle accidents, falls and car crashes are the other top causes.

Safety experts said they hope the study gives parents a wake-up call.

Alan Korn of Safe Kids Worldwide said, "It's not that the parents in West Virginia care about their kids less than the parents in Vermont. ... They love their kids, but we need to do a better job in educating them and they need to do a better job of focusing on the risks associated with children."

Ohio was ranked the 27th safest state. The study ranked all 50 states and the District of Columbia according to the number of summertime accidental deaths per 100,000 children.
