W.Va. statewide cleanup effort to get under way

By The Associated Press

CHARLESTON, W.Va. --

West Virginia residents who want to clean up their state have about a week to register with the Department of Environmental Protection.

The department said in a news release that people have until March 1 to sign up for the Make It Shine Statewide Cleanup, which will take place in the first two weeks of April.

The program is co-sponsored by the state Division of Highways. It will provide cleanup materials, waste hauling and landfill fees to community groups that volunteer to clean up state streams or public lands.

More than 3,800 West Virginians participated in last year's cleanup. They removed close to 150 tons of trash and 4,200 tires from the state's landscape.
