Youth football team must pay to use field

HANCOCK COUNTY, W.Va. —

The Oak Glen Junior Bears' first game is Sept. 2, but where it's going to be is still uncertain. According to organizers, it will cost the organization $2,000 for the season -- or $500 per home game -- to use Oak Glen High School's new field. It didn't cost anything for them to use the old football field, they said.

"We own that field out there. The taxpayers are the ones that paid for the fields. That, and Weir High's field. We're building a new middle school down Weirton. I mean they raised our property taxes to pay for this stuff," said Bill Jones, a grandparent of a player.

According to Hancock County school officials, it's policy to charge organizations to use school property if they aren't associated with the school, and using the old school isn't an option because it's up for sale. Many parents are upset, but at least one said she understands the fee.

"A lot of people are upset about it, which I can understand. However, we have booster meetings every Tuesday at 7:30 (p.m.) that they could come and ask their questions. We don't get a lot of outcome at the booster meetings, and I don't think they completely understand why the charge is there," said Cameo Greenlief.

According to the commissioner of the Junior Bears Chris Skeeles, the charge is due to the turf on the new field. More games on the turf means it will need replaced sooner. However, Skeeles said he would like the cost to be lower.

If all else fails, Skeeles said, the organization will look to fundraising to make sure the kids have a place to play. Coaches from the organization will also be attending the school board meeting Aug. 13 to voice concerns.
