Wheeling Central Girls Fall 57-49 In State Hoops Title Game

Wheeling Central gave three-time defending state champion Huntington St. Joe all they would want to handle, but the Irish would pull away for a 57-49 victory Saturday afternoon in Charleston.

The Maroon Knights only trailed the top seeded team 26-20 at the half, as senior Cassie Sorge scored 12 of her team high 19 points in the first half.

Early in the third, Central would tie the game at 28 on an Emily Bucon 3, However the Irish ended the frame on a 12-1 run to lead by 11,

Penn Kurtz's crew would battle back again in the fourth quarter. An Emily Bucon layup would put the Maroon Knights down just three with 53 seconds remaining. In fact, Central would have the ball down three, but turned it over and the Irish's Mychal Johnson scored two of her game-high 22 points to help seal their fourth straight state title.

Wheeling Central, the OVAC Class 2A champs, cap off their season with a 24-4 record.
