Wheeling Central head football coach Mike Young earned the 44th annual Bill Van Horne OVAC Coach of the Year award at the OVAC's Banquet of Champions Monday night at Wesbanco Arena.
Young was a finalist for a fourth time, but a first time winner. He led the Maroon Knights to the fifth state title during his tenure, despite losing 12 seniors and the starting quarterback from their 2010 title team.
Joining Young as finalists were Steubenville Big Red wrestling coach Mike Blackburn, St. Clairsville boys' basketball coach Kim Clifford, Parkersburg South wrestling coach Paul Jackson and Fort Frye girls and boys hoops coach Dan Liedtke.
Also at Monday's banquet, thousands of dollars in scholarships were handed out, along with OVAC champion pennants, and the OVAC Subway Cup awards, given to the overall class champion in all sports. Wheeling Park was the 5A champion, St. Clairsville in 4A, Martins Ferry in 3A, Linsly in 2A, and Madonna in Class A.
