Fahey Appointed To Wheeling Vice-Mayor

The City of Wheeling announced Eugene T. Fahey, councilman-elect for Wheeling’s 6th Ward, has been appointed vice-mayor.

Fahey will officially be sworn-in on July 1 at 6:40 p.m. in City Council Chambers.

Gene Fahey is vice-president and general manager of the Altmeyer Funeral Homes & Crematory of West Virginia. He is a lifelong resident of the Wheeling area now residing in Elm Grove with his wife, Hope. He has a son, Jamie. He received his Bachelors Degree from West Liberty State College and then graduated from the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science.

Gene is a member of St. Joseph Cathedral Parish in Wheeling. He is also a 4th-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #504, Wheeling, where he serves on the First Degree initiation team and is a member of the golf club, he is the President of the Wheeling Serra Club, the immediate past-president of the Wheeling Circus Saints and Sinners, Poodles and Hanneford Tent where he continues to serve as National Director, he is the immediate past president of the West Virginia Board of Funeral Service Examiners serving from 1998 through 2006, he is a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Elm Grove, Aerie 1891, the Wheeling Elks, BPOE #28, Wheeling, The Ancient Order of Hibernians, Wheeling, the Fraternal Order of Police Association, Wheeling, the East Wheeling Business Council, the West Virginia Funeral Directors Association where he served as past president of the Northern District, the National Funeral Directors Association, the Wheeling Lions Club, the Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce where he completed the Leadership Wheeling Program, Wheeling Country Club, the Elm Grove Civics , and the IOLA Club of Wheeling.

Mayor-Elect McKenzie said, “With his business background and community roots, I thought Gene would make an excellent vice-mayor.”

“I am humbled yet will be honored to serve this capacity,” Fahey said regarding the appointment.

Joining Fahey on the City Council are three other new members and three incumbents. They are:

• Mayor-Elect Andy McKenzie • Gloria Delbrugge representing the First Ward • Vernon E. Seals representing the Second Ward • Robert “Herk” Henry representing the Third Ward • James F. Tiu representing the Fourth Ward • Don Atkinson representing the Fifth Ward

The Committee Appointments have also been made. Vernon Seals will serve as President Pre Tempore, which means he is the Senior Member of Council and will lead the Council meetings if both the Mayor and Vice-Mayor are unable to attend. Each member of Council is to serve as chair of one committee, vice-chair of one committee, and member of a third. The Mayor is ex-officio member of the Rule Committee and Promotions and Public Relations Committee. The committees are as follows:

The City Council meetings are held on the first and third Tuesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers, Room 206 of The City-County Building. All meetings are open to the public.
