Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin took center stage at the Republican National Convention Wednesday night as she officially accepted the vice-presidential nomination in a speech that still has many people talking.Less than a week since Palin was chosen to be Sen. John McCain's running mate, her speech addressed some of the issues that have quickly arisen about her since then.Palin took on several topics, starting with her critics' view that she has lack of political experience. Palin was mayor of a small town in Alaska prior to becoming governor."I guess a small town mayor is sort of like a community organizer except that you have actual responsibilities," she said. For some, Palin's speech crossed party lines."I like her as a candidate and I can say that as a registered Democrat," said Judy Brancazio. "I like everything I hear. I'm anxious to hear more. I thought last night was an exciting convention night."Other local residents had mixed reactions to Palin's address.Brenda Rinkes, of Mingo Junction, said she wasn't sure about Palin, but said she was not happy with McCain's stances."She's OK. ... He's just not doing things the way he should do it," Rinkes said. Some, like Thomas Strohmeyer, said they were impressed by the vice-presidential candidate."She's no dummy. I can say that much. She knows what she's talking about," said Strohmeyer, also of Mingo Junction.Palin also addressed questions surrounding her personal life, and the self-described "average hockey mom" said she could take on Washington.Thursday will mark the final night of the Republican National Convention, with McCain being the keynote speaker.Workers on Thursday quickly reconstructed the stage into a town-hall setup for McCain's speech, an atmosphere that is said to reflect the style of his campaign thus far.For continuing Decision 2008 coverage, visit our politics page.
