Ohio County To Test All Electronic Voting Machines
Posted: 12:27 pm EDT October 22,2008Updated: 1:10 pm EDT October 22,2008
Elections workers are testing all voting machines in Ohio County after reports of votes being switched in other parts of the state. Two counties in West Virginia reported recently that their voting machines switched votes. In response, Ohio County officials are recalibrating the eight machines used for early voting. In addition, county elections coordinator Toni Chieffalo said they will manually test each of the county's 165 electronic voting machines.Chieffalo said she routinely tests each machine in all 39 precincts before Election Day. To do so, she will go through a ballot on each machine, simulate voting and ensure the chosen candidate is highlighted without any problems. As of Wednesday, she said she found no problems with the handful of machines she tested. Because there is no paper ballot option, she encouraged voters to simply be careful about where they touch the screen. In other counties with voting problems, she said voters can use the eraser side of a pencil to more accurately select their choice."I have even been trying to see what maybe the voters are doing, but I think you just have to watch where you put your finger on the screen," she said.Visit our politics page for continuing Decision 2008 coverage.
