Feds Close Case Against Local Congressman; No Charges

Federal prosecutors have closed their multi-year investigation of U.S. Rep. Alan Mollohan.The U.S. Attorney's office in Washington, D.C., confirmed Tuesday that it had ended its probe. It had appeared to focus on the West Virginia Democrat's financial disclosures and funding earmarks for nonprofit groups that he had helped create.Mollohan said the U.S. Justice Department told his lawyer that it had closed the case and isn't considering any charges.Feeling exonerated, Mollohan said the probe was spurred by what he called right-wing attacks and a politically motivated assault on his character.Mollohan recently filed for re-election. Tuesday's news arrives after at least six Republicans have filed for a chance to challenge him in November.Andy Seré, regional press secretary for National Republican Congressional Committee, said, “Alan Mollohan’s support for Obama’s war on Mountaineer jobs proves that it doesn’t matter whether he’s in Congress or behind bars – he stopped representing West Virginians a long time ago.”
