Shadyside's Bid For State Championship Comes Up Short
Ben Schaefer ran for 100 yards to lead Maria Stein Marion Local over Shadyside 17-0 in Friday's Division VI state final. Marion Local held Shadyside to 52 total yards.
Strong winds hampered the passing game of both teams. The 12-2 Flyers used their stifling defense to claim a third championship. They also won it all in 2000 and 2001. Schaefer had only 139 rushing yards on the season before taking
over in the final for Marc Otte, his injured teammate who led the team in rushing. The Flyers scored on Luke Homan's two-yard run in the third quarter. Chris Stucke threw a 58-yard scoring pass to Dan Moeller.
The 11-2 Tigers made their first appearance in a state final.
