3.15.14 Video Highlights - Condon, Sylvester Shine Again In Nailers 2-0 Victory Saturday

Updated: Saturday, March 15 2014, 11:52 PM EDT

WHEELING, WV- Defense and goaltending were on full display on Saturday night, as the Wheeling Nailers and Cincinnati Cyclones battled for sixty thrilling minutes at WesBanco Arena. Mike Condon and Rob Madore combined to stop all but one of the 54 shots they faced, as Wheeling's Cody Sylvester netted a shorthanded goal 2:27 into the third. The Nailers ultimately won, 2-0.

Cincinnati's defense was tight from the start, as the Nailers were only able to muster five shots on goal during the opening period, while the visitors tallied ten. Wheeling turned the tables in the second period, outshooting the Cyclones 13-8, but the game remained scoreless.

The Nailers finally broke the 0-0 deadlock at the 2:27 mark of the third period. Tom Kuhnhackl batted a puck out of the air, forcing Cincinnati to chase the puck in its own zone, while playing on the man advantage. However, the breakout was thwarted early, as Cody Sylvester forced a turnover, leading to a breakaway. Sylvester kept the puck on his forehand, beating Rob Madore on his stick side. The score remained 1-0 until the final minute of the contest, when Zack Torquato made two brilliant blocks, leading the play in the other direction. Christiaan Minella finished off a 2-0 victory with an empty net goal, assisted by Sahir Gill and Torquato at 19:41.

Mike Condon picked up his third shutout of the season and second against the Cyclones, stopping all 31 shots he faced. Rob Madore played very well, but took the loss for Cincinnati, after making 23 saves on 24 shots.

The Nailers will begin a three-game road trip against the Reading Royals on Sunday at 4:05. Wheeling's next home game takes place on March 28th at 7:00 against the Elmira Jackals.
