Area Golfers Earn Spots In West Virginia, Ohio State Tournaments

Weirton Madonna claimed the West Virginia Class A Region 1 title Monday afternoon at Williams Country Club in Weirton.

The Blue Dons shot a 227, 17 shots better than runner-up St. Marys. Both teams advance to next week's state tournament at Oglebay.

Wheeling Central finished third with a 252, eight behind St. Marys.

Madonna's Nick Mazur was medalist, shooting a 75. Teammates Michael Rogers and Alex Colantonio were only one shot back.

Magnolia freshman Peyton Moore (80) and Bishop Donahue's Stephen Gretchen (81) also advanced to the state tournament by being the top two individuals on a non-qualifying team.

Meanwhile in Class AAA, Wheeling Park finished second in the region 1 tournament in Parkersburg. Parkersburg South edged out Park by four shots.

Freshman Kyle Wensel shot an 80 to lead the Patriots from Wheeling.

Brooke's Logan Lojszczyk qualified as an individual, shooting 76.

At the Ohio Division II East District tournament, East Liverpool won the team title. Blake Prince earned medalist honors.

Cambridge's Skyler Roederer also qualifed to the state meet in Columbus as an individual.
