Madonna, Wheeling Central, East Liverpool Win OVAC Golf Titles

The first OVAC championship of the 2013-2014 school year is underway. Madonna, Wheeling Central and East Liverpool all cruised to team titles in the first day of the OVAC Golf Championships at Oglebay.


Madonna won its fifth straight team title, shooting a 292. Madonna's Michael Rogers earned medalist honors by carding a 1 under par 70.  Teammate Thomas Gianni was 3rd overall, two shots back, while fellow Blue Don Nick Mazur was 4th overall.


Bishop Donahue's Stephen Gretchen was runner-up medalist, finishing one shot behind Rogers. Also earning All-OVAC in Class A were Beallsvile's John Dietrich and Conotton Valley's Brandon Busby.


Wheeling Central cruised to the win in Class AA, shooting 294. Central's Justin Leonard was medalist, posting a 73. He won on the first hole of the playoff with teammate Thomas Stanley.  The Maroon Knights had two additional all-OVAC golfers, Jonathan Haley and Sean McFarland.


Bridgeport's Zach Hernick and Shadyside's Jake Gregan rounded out the 2A All-OVAC team.


Finally, in Class 4A, East Liverpool won its second straight OVAC crown, finishing 36 shots ahead of Meadowbrook. St. Clairsville was 3rd.


The Potters' Blake Prince won medalist for the 3rd straight year. He shot a 73.


St. Clairsville's Seth Vannoy was runner-up medalist, defeating Meadowbrook's Nate Frencik in a playoff.  East Liverpool's Isaac Davidson and Joey Cilone also earned All-OVAC.


The championships continue Thursday morning at 9:30 with the Class 5A and 3A tournaments at Oglebay.
