Nailers Drop Regular Season Home Finale

Updated: Sunday, April 6 2014, 12:01 AM EDT

WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers will have to wait another day, before clinching a spot in the 2014 Kelly Cup Playoffs. Despite tying the game early in the third, the Nailers fell to the Orlando Solar Bears, 3-1 in their regular season home finale at WesBanco Arena.

It took until the latter stage of the first period for one of the teams to find the back of the net, and unfortunately for the Nailers, that team was Orlando. Connor Goggin slipped a pass through the slot to CJ Severyn, who roofed a wrist shot into the right side of the goal, with 1:11 remaining in the frame.

The score remained 1-0 until the 1:58 mark of the third period, when the Nailers pulled even. Christiaan Minella centered the puck to Sahir Gill, who jammed a shot inside of the left post for his 12th tally of the campaign. The goal extended Gill's point streak to seven games and Minella's to six. With 10:43 to go, the Solar Bears regained the lead, as Tyler Murovich capitalized on a turnover, sliding a shot through Kieran Millan's pads from the left circle. Orlando ultimately pulled away with 3-1 win, as Zach Harrison sealed the final score with an empty net goal.

Maxime Clermont stopped 33 of the 34 shots he faced, earning the win for the Solar Bears. Kieran Millan suffered the tough luck loss for Wheeling, despite making 22 saves on 24 shots.

The Nailers will conclude the regular season in Cincinnati on Friday and Saturday, with both contests taking place at 7:35.
