PEORIA, Ariz. -- Dealing with difficulty recovering from hiatal hernia surgery, Mariners third-base coach John Stearns stepped down Friday.

Promoted to replace him was Steubenville native Rich Donnelly, who in January was named manager of the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers in the Mariners system.

Donnelly, 67, will work with manager Lloyd McClendon in Seattle.

He’s a veteran of 27 years as a big-league coach, including 14 spent as a third-base coach, and has been in professional baseball for 43 years.

Donnelly is in his first year in the Mariners organization after spending the past three seasons managing in the New York Mets system.
