Wheeling Jesuit Wins Inaugural Mountain East Volleyball Title

Updated: Saturday, November 23 2013, 11:54 PM EST

WHEELING, W.Va. – The #1 ranked Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals captured the inaugural Mountain East Conference volleyball crown on Saturday night in an unexpected three-sets-to-nill victory over the #2 Fairmont State Falcons, 25-14, 25-22, and 25-14.
The win puts the Cardinals at a perfect 19-0 in MEC play on the season, and a perfect 9 sets – 0 in the Mountain East Tournament. The Cardinals will now move onto the NCAA Regional tournament the week following the holiday break, a tournament they are in the running to host for the second-straight year.
WJU came storming out of the gates in the first set, running out to a 11-2 lead, to give the Cardinals and their raucous crowd immediate momentum against a team they have seen twice already this year.
“We know their players so well, they know us so well… I really didn’t expect to come out like we did,” said WJU head Coach Christy Benner. “I expected us to come out strong, but this was incredible. Everything clicked for us. It was a great match against a great team.”
The Cardinals were led once again by Mountain East player of the year, senior Jenna Pew, who was a force to be reckoned with all night long, tallying an error-free 15 kills and seven total blocks.
WJU’s class of stellar freshman were equally as dominant, with MEC freshman of the year Haley Kindall totaling seven error-free kills, and MEC All-Freshman team middle blocker Emma Schleucher taking seven kills as well.
Jenna Pew credits much of the team’s success tonight on setter Andrea Thobe who had 35 assists on the evening.
“We were focusing a lot on transition tonight. That worked, and helped our setter Andrea out a lot,” said Pew. “I think we kept their blockers guessing witch was a huge advantage.”
With strong performances all weekend, Pew, Schleucher, and Kindall were named to the MEC All-Tournament team as well.
The NCAA Tournament field will be announced tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m.
