After a scorching July, you had to figure that August would be a bit cooler. Indeed, we were nearly five degrees cooler in August compared to July, even though August was a little warmer than average. The average high temperature in August was 81.8 degrees, just a tenth of a degree cooler than normal, while the average low was 62.6 degrees, 1.4 degrees above normal.

August could not match July in 90 degree days, either. After reaching 90 degrees or above nine times in July, we hit exactly 90 twice in August (on the second and the fifth), bringing our total for the year so far to 14. The month’s coolest temperature was 52 degrees on August 12. No temperature records were set in the month.

August was another wet month, with 4.44 inches of rain, almost an inch and a quarter above normal. By month’s end, we were nearly nine inches above average for the year in precipitation, with 34.71 inches of rain and melted snow. This puts us only a couple of inches below our average precipitation for the year (36.85 inches) with four months to go.

Our wettest day was August 14, with 1.1 inches of rain. No daily precipitation records were set in August, but there were flooding concerns in the area on August 7 and August 19, and severe thunderstorms developed on August 1, 7, 9, and 19..
