Driest November on record

Previous Posts

By Kevin Carter

We started November on the wet side, with 0.15 inches of rain on the first day of the month.  Only a quarter of an inch of rain fell the rest of the month, making for our driest November ever recorded.  The 0.40 inches of rain was well below the old record of 0.69 inches set in 1976.  It was a big change from our extremely wet September and October, which combined for 13.9 inches of rain, 8.57 inches above average.  November 1 turned out to be the wettest day of the month and was one of only 5 days in November with measurable precipitation.

A trace of snow was recorded on November 24, our first snow of the season and the only day with snow during the month.  An average November receives 2 inches of snow, and since we also did not see any snow in October (which averages 0.4 inches), we are off to a bit of a slow snow start.

This record dry November was also cooler than average.  The average high temperature for the month was 48.9 degrees, 3.2 degrees cooler than normal, while the average low of 29.8 degrees was 4.1 degrees below normal.   We hit 70 degrees twice in November (November 11 and 12), while the month's coldest reading was 22 degrees on November 29.  There were no temperature records during November, and no severe weather other than some gusty winds on Novmeber 12 when a wind advisory was issued.
