January Above Average

By Kevin Carter

On the first day of January we hit 55 degrees.  The last day of the month was 5 degrees warmer.  So, it should come as no surprise that the month was a mild one, with temperatures averaging nearly 6 degrees above normal.  The surprise is that January was also snowier than average.

12.2 inches of snow fell in January, 0.4 inches above average.  The snowiest day was January 21, when 3.5 inches of snow fell, a record for the date.   We were still below normal for the season for snowfall at the end of the month, with 13.3 inches compared to the average of 22.5 inches.

January was wetter than average as well, with 3.01 inches of rain and melted snow, 0.47 inches above average.  The wettest day was January 26, with 0.50 inches of rain.  It was an active month, with 4 days of winter weather advisories, 2 days with winter storm warnings, two days with wind advisories, and two days with flood watches or warnings in the area.

The average high temperature for January was 41.5 degrees, 6.4 degrees above average.  The average low was 24.4 degrees, 5.5 degrees above normal.  We did not set any temperature records during the month, with the coldest reading 4 degrees on January 20 and the warmest 62 degrees on January 23.
