December Weather Typical For 2011

Previous Posts

By Kevin Carter

As December went, so went the year.  Both were milder than average, wetter than average, and less snowy than normal.  The last month of 2011 was another wet one, with 3.24 inches of precipitation, about a third of an inch above average.  Snowfall was hard to come by, however, with only 1.1 inches of snow, more than a half foot shy of normal.

December was a mild month, with the average high of 44.4 degrees nearly 4 degrees above average, and the average low of 30.3 degrees more than 5 degrees above average.  The mildest day came late in the month, with 60 degrees on December 21, while the coldest reading of 17 degrees occurred on both December 11 and December 12.  No temperature or precipitation records were set in the month.

The average high temperature for the entire year was 61.9 degrees, 0.3 degrees above normal.  The year’s average low temperature was 43.9 degrees, 2.2 degrees above normal.  Only three months had colder than average temperatures, those being January, March, and October.

Only two months were drier than average, January and July.  Those 10 wetter than normal months helped make 2011 a very wet year, with 53.5 inches of precipitation, a whopping 16.65 inches above average.  Snowfall got off to a great start in 2011, with 18.5 inches in January and 13 inches in February.  However, only 5.1 inches fell the rest of the year, dragging the total of 36.6 inches more than 4 inches below average.
