At least the nights were not warmer than average in June, but we heated up by day.  Low temperatures in June averaged 58.2 degrees, right at normal.  High temperatures came in at 81.7 degrees, nearly two degrees above average.  We hit 90 degrees or above five times, including 97 on June 29, our hottest day since July 31, 1999 when our high was 98 degrees.  No temperature records were broken during the month.

Besides being warmer than average, June was much drier than average as well.  We received 2.07 inches of rain in June, 1.64 inches below the average of 3.71 inches.  More than half of June’s rain (1.17 inches) came on the first day of the month, by far our wettest day in June but not a record for the day.

With the dry conditions, severe weather was at a minimum in June.  The only days with severe thunderstorms were June 18 and June 29.  June 29 also had a flash flood warning in Jefferson County and tornado warnings for Tuscarawas, Harrison, Guernsey, Belmont, and Jefferson counties, but no tornados actually touched down.  Widespread damage was reported as a line of severe thunderstorms raced across the area with winds perhaps as high as 100 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service.  This line of storms, classified as a derecho by the Weather Service, actually started near Chicago and raced all the way to the Washington D.C. area, with more than 1,200 reports of severe wind and hail.
