April was cool and dry

By Kevin Carter

For the first time in more than a year, we had a drier and cooler than average month.  Back in January, 2011, temperatures were 2.8 degrees cooler than average and precipitation was about a half inch below normal.  Temperatures during the recently concluded April came in about a half degree below average and precipitation was more than an inch below average.

Our average high in April was right where it’s supposed to be at 62.1 degrees, but lows averaged 38.7 degrees, nearly a degree below average.  There were no temperature records set during the month, with our warmest day of 83 degrees coming on April 30 and our coldest reading of 29 degrees occurring on April 7.  Amazingly, the average temperature in April (50.4 degrees) was a degree cooler than what we had in March (51.4 degrees).

Only 1.86 inches of rain and melted snow fell in April, way below the average of 3.15 inches.  There was a trace of snow which came on April 10 and 11, compared to the monthly average of 1.5 inches.  The wettest day was April 21 with 0.52 inches of rain.  No precipitation records were set in April, and there was no severe weather during the month as well.

We can close the books on the 2011-2012 snow season as well.  We ended up with 24.6 inches of snow, 17.3 inches below average.
