Sandy makes October another wet month

October is typically our driest month of the year, with 2.36 inches of precipitation on average. Thanks to an assist from Hurricane Sandy, this was not a typical October.  We received 4.30 inches of rain the last 5 days of October, pushing our total for the month to 5.36 inches, 3 inches above average.  We set two daily precipitation records during the height of Sandy’s fury, with 1.55 inches on October 29 and 1.53 inches on October 30.

Some snow was reported in the southern portions of our area, but our official observations did not include any snow, so we start the 2012-2013 season 0.4 inches below the October average.  There were high wind warnings and flood warnings October 29 and 30 as Sandy battered the area, but wind gusts stayed below 50 miles per hour and no significant flooding was reported.

We did set one high temperature record in October, and it came rather late in the month.   Our warmest day was that record-breaking 82 degree high on October 25.  The month’s coldest reading was 31 degrees on October 13.  We ended the month with an average high temperature of 63.1 degrees, 1.6 degrees below normal, while the average low was 44.5 degrees, 1.2 degrees above average.
