A cool and wet September

Previous Posts

By Kevin Carter

September got off to a really wet start, with 3.95 inches of rain on the first day of the month, a record for the date.  Rain exceeded an inch two more days in September, with 1.07 inches on September 18 and 1.66 inches on September 27.  We ended up with 8.54 inches of rain, 5.57 inches above average.

All that rain helped produce the threat of flooding in the area, with flood watches or warnings somewhere in our area on five days during the month (September 1, 3, 17, 18, and 27).  Severe thunderstorms were also in the area on September 7, 22, and 27.  September 27 also was the day a tornado touched down just east of Washington, Pennsylvania producing some minor damage.

September started warm, with temperatures reaching the 80s the first seven days of the month.  However, it ended up cool, with highs only in the 60s the last nine days of September.  The average high for September was 73.8 degrees, two degrees below average, while the average low was 53.8 degrees, 0.9 degrees cooler than normal.  The highest temperature during September was 87 degrees on September 6, while the month's lowest reading was 40 degrees on September 23.  No temperature records were set during the month.
