December hat trick: warm, wet, white

Previous Posts

By Kevin Carter

December had it all . . .warmer than average temperatures, along with more precipitation and snow than usual.

The month started very mild with a high of 64 degrees on December 4, but ended cold, with a low of 20 degrees on December 31.  Overall, the milder temperatures won out, with the average high temperature for the month coming in at 45 degrees, 4.5 degrees above normal, while the month's average low temperature of 31 degrees was 5.9 degrees above normal.  There were no daily temperature records set during the month.

December was a wet month, with only ten dry days.  The wettest day was a record for the date, 1.03 inches of rain on December 10.  There was only a trace of snow once (December 11) during the first 20 days of December, then 13.9 inches fell during the month' s final 11 days, including daily record amounts of 6.2 inches on December 29 and 3.4 inches on December 26.  This put December 5.6 inches above average for snowfall, while the total precipitation of 6.28 inches was 3.36 inches above average.

The wintry weather produced four days of severe weather, with winter weather advisories issued by the National Weather Service for snow on December 21, 22, and 29, and a winter storm warning on December 26 for snow, freezing rain and sleet.
